You can also hop on an island ferry to Alcatraz Island, which is located 1.25 miles offshore from San Francisco. From 1934 to 1963, Alcatraz was home to some of America’s most dangerous prisoners and convicts— Al Capone, James “Whitey” Bulger, and George “Machine Gun” Kelly being just a few of the most notorious names that called the maximum-security prison home. Now it’s one of San Francisco’s most prominent landmarks and popular tourist destinations, so be sure to book your ferry in advance.

Another fabulous hot spot for those who prefer indoor activities is the Walt Disney Family Museum, found in the Presidio. The Presidio grounds once operated as an active Army base and was the strongest coastal defense on the Pacific Coast until 1994. The main museum building was once a barracks used to house soldiers.
